In Memoriam - Remembering Canadian Baseball Legends who died in 2011- Part 1
Jock Talk

To read Kevin Glew's entire blog on this subject click here.

As a new year approaches, it’s a good time to look back and savour the memories of the Canadian baseball legends that we lost in 2011.

In part one of my two-part series, I’ve created obituaries for the legends that we lost during the first half of 2011:

Roy Hartsfield, January 15
After 15 seasons as a dugout boss in the minors, this Chattahoochee, Ga., native was named the first manager of the Toronto Blue Jays. The old school, story-telling skipper, who spoke with a deep Southern drawl, guided the Jays’ to a 9-5 victory in snowy conditions in the club’s debut on April 7, 1977, his first game in a three-season tenure in Toronto. In all, Hartsfield spent 43 years in baseball as a player, coach and manager. During his playing career, he suited up with the Triple-A Montreal Royals in 1953 and 1954. In retirement, he resided in Georgia and fittingly passed away in a town called Ball Ground at age 85.

City of London Media Advisory

Wednesday December 28, 2011

Our first dose of winter has arrived

The City’s 25 salters, all equipped with plows, are currently salting and scraping main roads.

Main streets are mostly bare and wet.

Sanders will move to side streets soon to salt/sand at intersection, hills and curves.

Garbage and recycling collection is off to a normal start. It is “4 Container Exemption” for Zone B today (Masonville, Whitehills, etc.) followed by each Zone until all zones have their extra service by January 5. It will be slow going for both services today due to the volume of material and road conditions.

Ontario's Human Rights Laws Will Be

Reviewed in 2012 - Speak at London Hearings or Submit Your Opinions

Here's How!

Ontario's three year old Human Rights Rights Tribunal (OHRT) will undergo a Formal Review by Lawyer, Mr. James Pinto L.L.P.  in 2011-2012. He was selected in August 2011 by the former Attorney General, the Honourable Chris Bentley who now holds a different Cabinet Portfolio.

If you would like to make a written submission to this review or appear before the Panel when it comes to London in mid-February click here for all the details.

BACKGROUND

In 2006 the former Attorney General Michael Bryant shocked disabled rights groups and human rights advocacy groups when he introduced Bill 107 into the Ontario Legislature. It created the new Ontario Human Rights Tribunal and eliminated the powers of the Human Rights Commission to investigate complaints.

Under the new Bill, individuals who made complaints, filed the complaint and the case went directly to a Tribunal hearing. In some cases mediation was possible before the hearing. In effect, it forced individuals to act as their own lawyers. Former Attorney General Chris Bentley saw Bill 107 to its passage into law in 2007-2008 after the 2007 Provincial election.

Wednesday, 21 December 2011
Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011 – More Thames Valley coaches have received certified training to protect student athletes from abuse than any other school board in Canada.

More than 1,000 Thames Valley staff, volunteers and administrators have completed the Respect in Sport (RIS) training program created by former NHL hockey player Sheldon Kennedy – who raised public awareness when he came forward as a victim of abuse at the hands of his coach.

“TVDSB has shown great leadership,” says RIS spokesperson Holly Abraham. “Several school boards are using our programs, but TVDSB was the first in Ontario and the largest school board implementation in the country.”
