A Gardener's Green Thumb #4 - When Your Balcony Plants Need Diapers

Every Apartment Dweller living above the first floor who Hangs a Flower Basket or Places Flowers on

the Balcony Edge or Puts Pots on the Balcony Floor Dreads One Thing -

Complaints from Tenants living below them.

Some ignore a little bit of water that falls during watering. Others march to the Landlord's office instead

of your door. They could also ignore it if it is not a constant problem.

You can of course PUT DIAPERS ON YOUR POTTED PLANTS AND PLANTERS (SEE BELOW)

I've chosen the washable kind

London to host evacuees

In response to a request from Emergency Management Ontario to accept evacuees from the extreme forest fires in northwestern Ontario, the City of London today announced it is prepared to be a host community.

London Mayor Joe Fontana formally declared a state of emergency for the purpose of receiving evacuees under the City’s Emergency Plan and Emergency Social Services Plan.

“Our community is ready, able and more than willing to assist these families forced from their homes by the forest fires in northwestern Ontario,” Mayor Joe Fontana said. “We are a compassionate city and we need to take care of our neighbours, regardless of where they’re from. We would like to thank the many partners who are coming together to make this happen. We’re happy to do what we can to provide safety, support and comfort.”

City’s Response to Heat Alert issued for Middlesex-London
The City is taking the extreme heat alert very seriously
· Dearness Home has been placed on CODE RED alert for the remainder of the week – extra vigilance for residents venturing outside; extra hydration
· Encouraging minor sports organizations to evaluate programming, but at least ensure extra breaks for player hydration

Heat Alert pre-cautions at Playgrounds and Camps

City program locations follow MLHU “tips to avoid heat related illnesses” (see Heat Alert advisory)

In addition to these tips and pre-cautions:

· Off site excursions are cancelled (except for those to swimming pools or spray pads or with air-conditioned destinations)

· Trips normally taken by foot, use bus transportation instead.

· Sites without air conditioning will be using fans if necessary

· Staff monitor children for adequate use of sunscreen and wearing of hats

· Physical activities (particularly outdoor) are limited in duration and location (e.g. shade)

· Major events (involving more than one site) focused on physical activity are cancelled or postponed (e.g. Timpany Tournament – major annual soccer tournament – is postponed from July 20 to July 27)

· Lots of water breaks throughout the day to maintain hydration

Special arrangements for Thursday, July 21

Temperatures expected to spike to above 36 degrees centigrade with humidex of over 45.

· We will becancelling all free playground sites on Thursday

Communicated by:

· Verbal messages to families starting today

· Signage at playground sites

· Notices sent home to parents

· Notice on city website

Staff will be on site at playgrounds for first 45 minutes of program on Thursday to ensure no child is dropped off at site and stranded there.

· All day camps will continue to run as normal on Thursday, implementing the usual heat alert precautions.

(We run camps given that many families also rely on these programs for child minding services.)

We continue to monitor the situation day by day.

· All outdoor tennis lessons will be cancelled

City facilities available as cooling centres and/or have cooling components to programming

From Mask (1985) Roy (Rocky) Dennis

It is said that this poem was written by the late Roy (Rocky) Dennis

that the 1985 Movie Mask was based on. It was read during the movie MASK with Cher & Eric Stolz

The Poem reflects the bittersweet and sadly short nature of Roy (Rocky) Dennis' life due to an incurable neurological disease.

These things Are Good
Ice Cream and Cake
A Ride on a Harley
Seeing Monkeys in the Trees
The Rain on My Tongue and
The Sun Shining on my face

These Things are a Drag
Dust in My Hair
Holes in my Shoes
No Money in my Pocket
And the Sun Shining on My Face

I probably seem like a fossil for putting this movie  into the movie and video section but it truly is a classic. The poem below which is said to be be created by the lead character "Rocky Dennis," is read twice in the movie from son to mother.

It was an English assignment. It reflects the bittersweet relationship of of Dennis' life, the disease which disfigured his face and the relationship he had with his drug-addicted but devoted and loving mother played by Cher. The Wikipedia entry under Roy "Rocky" Dennis states that this poem was actually written by the real Roy Dennis.

I don't think there has been a movie since MASK that has contained all the elements of prejudice, discrimination, alternative lifestyles and yet a strong element of decency and understanding amongst so many of the characters.

Mask is based on the the true story of Roy "Rocky" Dennis. To learn more about the move and read reviews click here.
