The "Ruff 'N Stuff" Newsletter is written by the same person who faithfully put together the "Paws Off Leash" Newsletter which I have posted on this site for the past several years. It has contained very informative and fun information about dogs and the London Dog Owners Association. Ms. Beth Saylor was the author.

Now Ms. Saylor has begun a new publication called the "Ruff 'N Stuff Newsletter" which "makes you aware of canine events but more important to get you thinking about animal issues that are going on in and around our community. This can include canine, feline and wildlife."

I look forward to this publication. While we have owned cats and not dogs I have volunteered a few times for the LDOA at their dog parks.

It is wonderful to get together with pet owners, no matter what pet you own. The love you share and give your pet is always a common point.

Don't Forget the "Pooch Plunge" for Charity on Sunday September 4th at Stronach Pool at 1221 Sanford St. at the Sanford Recreational Complex off of Cheapside. More Info in the Ruff 'n Stuff Newsletter.

Rosemary Purdy (1941-2011) - A Neighbour Kipps Lane Will Never Forget

 ROSEMARY PURDY (1941-2011)

I'm sorry I didn't have one more chance to say goodbye to Rosemary. I'm sorry I didn't have one more chance to see her in a holiday costume pulling her bundle buggy home from Shoppers Drug Mart or Price Chopper.

We first met when we both lived on Kipps Lane at the Transglobe buildings. She was a strong voice in the Kipps Lane Tenant/Community Association and in the North East London Community Engagement (NELCE).

She was more than a school teacher and a devoted church member. She said it like she meant it on any number of issues. You could disagree with her, but you couldn't help admiring her spirit. She may not have always been politically correct but you knew where you stood with her. An admirable quality sorely lacking in our society today.

A Gardener's Green Thumb - It's Almost Harvest Time!

Gardeners who have Gardens on the Ground are probably already harvesting many of their crops,
including Red, Lucious Tomatoes.

The Soil in my Container Gardens is not that warm and the roots aren't so deep. My Balcony only gets about 6 hours of sun a day as well. It could use a bit more.

I'll have to wait a week or two but it won't be long.

It's Almost Harvest Time!!

Tomatoes From One of My Balcony Garden Tomato Plants -

Harvest Time is a Week or Two Away

There are of course many more vegetables  that you can grow in a garden than just tomatoes. I've focused on tomatoes because I garden on a balcony. Maybe next year I'll try herbs like dill, or rosemary

Many years ago I took over The Master Gardener's garden in Windsor for one last summer. I grew tomatoes, peppers, green onions, cucumbers, cooking onions, beans, cucumbers and even a few small watermelons.

GESCHA - CRAYON POLITICS

We cannot change where we came from. The best we can do is learn from our experiences and try to live every day to the fullest.

This simple belief is at the very root of Gescha's continuous attempts to tell his story. Born of Romanian-Asian descent and calling home to Saskatoon, SK, 24 year-old hip-hop raconteur Gescha is determined to tell this story through Crayon Politics, his debut full-length album.

13 tracks of buoyant energy and experimental (but always redeeming) sampling, Crayon Politics is the kind of album which hip-hop fans will find endearing and memorable for many reasons, not the least of which being the honesty that the album is laden with.

“El Presidente . . . El Perfecto” – Dennis Martinez’s perfect game 20 years later

"El Presidente.... El Perfecto" - Dennis Martinez's Perfect Game 20 Years Later

You can reach Kevin Glew's Canadian Baseball Blog "Cooperstown in Canada by clicking here

It seems fitting that former Expos broadcaster Dave Van Horne was honoured by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in the same week as the 20th anniversary of Dennis Martinez’s perfect game.

Van Horne’s inspired call of “El Presidente … El Perfecto” on July 28, 1991 was one of the most memorable in Canadian baseball history.

It’s hard to believe that 20 years have passed since Martinez disposed of 27 consecutive Dodgers in a 2-0 win at Chavez Ravine to become the only pitcher from a Canadian team to author a perfect game.

Employing 80 per cent fastballs, the pencil-thin, 36-year-old right-hander, who was the first big leaguer from Nicaragua, stifled a Dodgers lineup that included Brett Butler, Eddie Murray and Darryl Strawberry.
