Western - Society of Off-Campus Students
Go to http://www.usc.uwo.ca/off-campus/ and you will learn about the extensive programs that begin during frosh week and go all year round for students living off campus.
In my last "Rent Rant" published on LondonTopic.ca I took students to task for expecting their landlords and student unions to provide off campus students with activities and opportunities for them to get together and break the social isolation. One student from Western took me to task and rightfully so. She was right and I was abysmally wrong.
Go to http://www.usc.uwo.ca/off-campus/ and you will learn about the extensive programs that begin during frosh week and go all year round for students living off campus. There are plenty of opportunities for new students to meet with older students for social events, to obtain academic help or just to have talk to someone when you are feeling a bit stressed.
The Western Off-Campus program is very well organized, and provides individual help. They even have a lounge on campus. Please search this web site. There are many people in SOCS just waiting to help you adjust to your new home and school.

This entertaining movie is supposed to be set in 1971 and based on a real bank robbery. It's entertaining from the get-go. It looks like an episode from Eastenders with the grimy streets, crooked deals going on in the shops and the shady characters. Then it starts moving.
Photos of a very sensitive nature of members of the Royal Family must be retrieved from a small branch of a bank and several layers of institutions and petty criminals get involved to pull it off for various reasons.
It's a very entertaining DVD rental and a great way to spend a Saturday night or any night at $5.99. British films seem a touch more realistic and much more human. I doubt they are paid the obscene bucks to star in these movies and their lack of egos show in their films. For the complete review and run-down on the flick go to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0200465/ .
The Bank Job gets 4 buckets out of 5. There are more twists and turns to the story than you can keep up with. Get your snacks. Take your washroom break before the movie and stay for the duration. God Save the Queen.
Good Hearing is important for All. Back to School Time is a great time to Check Your Child's Hearing. It's Vital to His/Her Learning. It's Vital to those of all ages. Here's a great opportunity!
One of my favourite places to stroll when I go downtown is the corridor just outside the Central Library where various groups set up booths and information tables. Today I was finishing up some business downtown and I met Mr. Carl Jadischke of Beck Hearing Aide Centres Inc.
He was hosting a table full of information on hearing, hearing aids and the services that Beck Hearing Aid Centres offer. Beck was offering Free Hearing Consultations and visitors were encouraged to sign up if they felt they needed a test.
There was a short test of five questions the public could answer that determined if they could benefit from a free consultation. Give them a try.
1. Do you hear words but not understand what is said?
2. Do people seem to mumble?
3. Do others complain you play the TV or radio too loudly?
4. Do you find it difficult to hear in noisy environments?
5. Do your family members complain that you are not hearing them?
If you answered YES to any of these question, you were encouraged to book a FREE hearing test at the BECK Hearing Centre.
I discussed hearing loss or impairment at all ages with Jadischke. He explained that this FREE service has been offered to many persons who otherwise could not afford the fee charged in many other offices.
Beck is located at:
