"A Storybook to help young children understand a parent's bipolar illness"

from Nurturing Meadow Press

Dianne Prato, M.A., M.Ed. (C.C.C.) of London has recently launched a unique new website,
http://www.bipolarspokenhere.ca/home.html

This site promotes a number of strategies for people who are coping with bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depressive illness. Ms. Prato’s counseling practice focuses on educating people who have been diagnosed with the disorder. She is also sponsoring a new course titled Living with Bipolar Disorder.

This educational course offers eight, two-hour sessions in which people can exchange information on how they are coping with their diagnosis.

As well as launching the new website, Prato recently tackled another new challenge – book publishing. Under her imprint, Nurturing Meadow Press, she has published Purple Mamma, A storybook to help young children understand a parent’s bipolar illness.

This storybook was written from a child’s perspective by her daughter when she was a student teacher. Written from firsthand experience, it is the tale of how a little girl deals with a parent who has a mental illness. When parents with a mental illness read Purple Mamma to their children, they find it helps them to talk to their child about their illness.

The book is now available in the Children’s Library at the Central Library, from the Oxford Book Shop or from the publisher. You can learn more about Purple Mamma at www.purplemamma.ca http://www.purplemamma.ca
