TVDSB student earns a prestigious $75,000 national scholarship
A Dorchester secondary student has been named as one of 30 recipients of the largest undergraduate merit scholarship in Canada, worth $75,000.00.
Wesley Taylor, a Grade 12 student at Lord Dorchester Secondary School, beat out more than 3,200 applicants for the Loran Award, sponsored by the W. Garfield Weston Foundation and the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation. The prestigious Loran Awards are granted each year to talented young Canadians on the basis of character, service, and leadership potential.
In addition to his outstanding marks, Wes is the founder and now President of the school's Global Issues Club, the treasurer of the Students' Council, and is actively involved in drama productions and school sports. Wes is also very active within his community, as a swimming instructor at the Ingersoll Parks and Recreation Centre, and as a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club of London. Wes has also demonstrated tremendous character and leadership potential, funding his own to Ecuador to volunteer to help build a school during the summer of 2008.
The Loran Award was established in 1988. In 2005, Lord Dorchester Secondary School's Grade 12 student, David Vlemmix, was also an award recipient.
