Baseball - A Sure Sign of Spring - So How About Some Baseball Movies

As a new season approaches it's a good time to listen to John Fogarty's "Centrefield," just click here.

Although I'm not linking to the song, there is a hilarious spoof on You Tube to "Centrefield" lampooning those baseball player idiots who tainted the game by injecting themselves with steroids to pump up their stats and prolong their career careers. If you want a laugh, give the spoof a look.

When February comes so does Spring Training in Florida and Arizona. The players work themselves into playing shape and some young players try to make the team. In March the Grapefruit League gets into heavy action with the Spring Training games going on. Florida in March is a baseball lover's paradise.

Well, if you can't afford a trip to Florida or Arizona how about a trip to your Video Store. I'm going to start you off with a few old favourite baseball movies. There are many more out there but these should give you the itch to get to the batting cage.

Hardball- This modern take on the Bad News Bears came out in 2001. Unfortunately it was not well received. There was nothing cute about a bunch of little leaguers playing in the meanest Projects in Chicago with a burnt out gambling addict coach (Keanu Reeves). The movie did work though if you loved baseball and you were ready for some serious drama. Where the Bears were funny, ridiculous and harmless, Hardball was just plain scary at times.

You loved the kids and you pulled for them and you'll love the ending, but I'm not sure what you'll think of Reeves. He makes Matthau's Buttermaker in the Bears movie look like a saint. Click here for a thorough review. It's worth the price of a rental.

The Bad News Bears (1976) with Walter Mathau and Tatum O'Neal

The Bad News Bears Breaking Training (At the Astrodome)

Major League (The Original) 1989 with Charlie Sheen

The Final Season (2007) - For True Baseball Lovers

Damn Yankees (The Famous Musical about Baseball and a Deal with the Devil)
