Beloved Player and TV Announcer for the Detroit Tiger Dies at the age of 86 in Swifton, Arkansas

Next to Ernie Harwell, there is probably no other baseball announcer more connected to the Detroit Tigers than George Kell. He passed away Tuesday morning at the age of 86. Kell played for the Tigers and several other teams. He was recently inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. To read more about George Kell, his life, baseball career and his career as a baseball annnouncer for the Tigers click here.

I still believe there are some old die hards who remember George Kell and his nickname (George Swell) given to him by a Detroit radio DJ. He had that lovely Southern Arkansas accent that could lull you to sleep on a hot lazy summer afternoon as you listened or watched to the Tigers at Michigan and Trumball. The score didn't matter.

London once had an undying love for the Tigers which seems to have wavered in the past few decades. Somehow this major league City lead the Tigers Double A Affiliate slip through their fingers for lack of fan interest.

There also seems to be little fan interest in the Blue Jays since their World Series years ended. If you would like to relive those years for a few hours do what I did a few years back. Go to Joe Kools. The photos on the wall will take you back to the glory years of both teams.
