Dimitrie Rent Check #15: Tenants: Find Out How to Save $300
Tenants, Can you afford to pay over $300 in Provincial fines because you mistakenly parked in the wrong spot after a hard days work. I doubt it. A tenant in our complex went through this nightmare when he parked in a spot with the sign below.
Sign Means No Parking On This Spot And All to Right of Sign
He mistakenly thought the arrow meant only the spots to the right of the sign were for handicapped parking. HE WAS WRONG. The Provincial Court Judge had some pity on him and cut the fine in half but said that that was a one timer.
Tenants, Please, Please, Please, if you see this sign for handicapped parking, or the hanidicapped parking logo painted on the pavement, DON'T PARK THERE. If you have no permit please don't park there, EVER. This is a ticket you will never explain away.
Depending on where you live it may be the Commissionaires who will come out and ticket you. They have the contract from the City to put tickets on cars on the streets and in some parking lots. Ask your landlord if yours is one of them.
Your landlord would have to have a contract with them to patrol your lot. Otherwise Your landlord is the only one who could tell you, who would ticket you for disobeying signs. DON'T TAKE CHANCES.
All the signage in your lot pertaining to stop signs, parking, fire routes, handicapped spaces etc. was originally put in place to meet City of London Building Codes when the building was built. Who knows if the signage in place is still correct. Your best bet is to respect the signs you see for Fire Routes, Handicapped Parking etc. and don't take the chance on a ticket. My friend was lucky that he did not have to pay the full $300. You might not be.
