Recent traffic encounters with criminals and offenders must leave them scratching their heads.

Should a criminal interact with police, make eye contact, smile or wave in order to deflect attention?  In one case an officer sitting at a red light encounters another car pull up beside him.

While waiting for the light to change the passenger in the car tells the officer “hey officer, today’s my birthday!  Aren’t you going to wish me a happy birthday?”.

When the light turned green the officer followed the vehicle stopped it and found that the driver was a suspended driver, he was charged, the vehicle was impounded and oh yeah the passenger had a handgun in his belt.

Happy Birthday!
Another recent incident in London saw numerous police officers set up a perimeter in a neighbourhood where a robbery had just occurred.  A description of the suspect and the suspect’s car was given out and the officers sat and watched.

A short time later the car and the suspect nonchalantly pulled alongside one of the cruiser, the suspect waved and smiled as if he was a resident leaving the area.

The officer recognized him, followed him and arrested him.So whether you wave or avoid eye contact with that officer the end result might be the same.  Lastly an officer pulled a car over for driving aggressively, weaving in and out of traffic.

That driver turned out to be suspended and summed it up appropriately himself: “my licence is suspended, this is my girlfriend’s car, I shouldn’t have been driving like an idiot.  I dropped a lit cigarette and I burned myself.

I am sorry I am stupid”.There you go.Sgt Tom O’Brien
