Thousands of students entering high schools across Ontario each year struggle with the transition from elementary school to Grade 9. It’s not only a transition to a larger school with new academic expectations, but also a significant milestone in the progression toward adulthood.

But research shows that students who fail just one credit early in their high school careers are at a significantly greater risk of dropping out. That’s why a successful transition to Grade 9 is essential for long-term success in high school.

It’s also the goal of High School, Here I Come! – Thames Valley District School Board’s four-day program offering tips, hints and coping skills to give students a heads-up about high school.
The program, open to all Grade 8 students, will explore topics such as academic expectations and study skills, getting and staying organized, getting involved in the school community, and an introduction to the Grade 9 English and Math curricula. Students also have an opportunity to update their literacy, numeracy, and study skills.

The program has grown in popularity since it began six years ago and this year is offered at 16 high schools across Thames Valley. The cost is just $10 and runs from August 17 to 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration ends August 14.
