Local Football Team welcomes Cardston, Alberta in Heritage Canada Exchange
Oakridge Oaks Senior Football team will take on Cardston High School in an exhibition game on Tuesday at 1 pm. This is part of a 2 way exchange of young men from dramatically different parts of Canada.
Forty eight football players along with 5 staff and Mayor Rick Schow, from the southern Alberta town of 3800 arrived last Thursday. In September, Oakridge students will travel to Cardston to complete the exchange.
Head Coach Mike Darling states, “The value of exposing young men to a broad range of experiences develops a greater sense of what it means to be Canadian. I want these young men to develop friendships and to learn about a different culture through sport. Cardston is a small town founded by settlers from Utah and surrounded by farms and the Rockies.”
Activities planned include tours of UWO, Banting House, downtown London, Labatt Park, lectures by Chris Bertoia and Greg Marshall at Western, trip to Niagara Falls and Pinery Provincial Park.
The highlight of each week will be an exhibition football game. The London game will be at 1 pm Tuesday August 25th at TD Waterhouse stadium. Local MP Ed Holder will be the Grand Marshall and will meet with both teams before to discuss the importance of teamwork, leadership and the lessons to be learned.
The Canada Sports Exchange Programs organizes reciprocal cultural exchanges, involving Francophone and Anglophone youth across Canada. It is part of Department of Heritage. The aims and goals are to promote friendship, respect and better understanding of each other's language and culture. These exchanges are open to all youth from sports and non-sports groups between the ages of 12 and 17 years of age.
