The City of London Traffic Division has recently changed the pedestrian signals at Cherryhill Blvd and Oxford Street from the “old” flashing “don’t walk” symbol to a new “countdown” system.
Pedestrians now walking across the street will be able to see the exact timing until their green light will turn amber.
By doing this it is hoped that pedestrians will recognize the amount of time they have and choose NOT to cross if there isn’t going to be enough time for them.
Rather than use this as a reminder to speed through an intersection, motorists seeing the countdown should use this new system to better prepare themselves to STOP at an anticipated amber as the law requires. This is the only “countdown” system in London at this time, more might be considered as systems are replaced. The cost to make the change is approximately $10,000.London Police want all motorists to obey the amber lights at intersections and STOP when it is safe to do so and pedestrians are asked to cross the road safely leaving the curb only when the “walk” symbol is visible.
