Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009 – A record number of backpacks and school supplies were donated this year by individuals and community partners supporting the Thames Valley Education Foundation’s Supplies for Students program.
More than 1,000 backpacks filled with supplies will be distributed to needy children throughout the Thames Valley District School Board this year. More than 5,500 backpacks have been distributed to children across Thames Valley since the program started in2001.
“We’re so pleased to be able to help children who need these essential items,” said Foundation Executive Director Rena Princis, pointing to the mountain of colourful backpacks in the atrium of the Board’s education centre in London.
“Given the current economy, this is an outstanding expression of the generosity of our school communities,” said Princis, adding that the supplies will be distributed after a ceremony Wednesday to announce the results of this year’s campaign.
Parent volunteers were among those who helped collect and sort donations of backpacks andsupplies at various locations throughout Thames Valley. Their efforts were greatly assisted by community partners such as the Kiwanis and business partners such as TD Canada Trust, Freedom 55 Financial and London Life, Costco, Staples, Herbal Magic, Argyle Mall and Westmount Shopping Centre.
The Foundation, one of the fastest growing public education foundations in Ontario, works to build partnerships in the community that enrich public education across the Thames Valley district.
“It is the Foundation’s vision to actively build partnerships with community groups, local businesses and concerned citizens to enhance educational opportunities for students,” said Foundation President Jan Hunter.
