Walking School Bus Launch at White Oaks Public School
To mark International Walk to School Day this year, White Oaks Public School will be introducing a Walking School Bus Program.
The concept of a walking school bus was started in Australia in the early 1990’s as a way to reduce traffic congestion.
It’s very popular throughout Europe.
How does the Walking School Bus work?
Parent volunteers act as bus drivers. They wear a high-visibility vest for extra security. Just like a regular school bus, a walking school bus walks a prescribed route to school so children can walk with them along the way.
This is being achieved with the support of the London Block Parent® Program.
Mobile Block Parent® volunteers successfully approved and police screened will accompany walking students to school to provide additional supervision and safety for the children.Walking to school reduces traffic congestion, which improves safety, air quality and keeps our children healthy. Children learn street safety rules through practise and build a better connection to their community through walking.Weather permitting, Officer Owl, the Block Parent® mascot will accompany the children at the launch, 8.30am on Wednesday 7th October starting at the corner of Finch & Ernest Ave, proceeding to White Oaks Public School down Ernest Ave. and across the park.We expect to arrive at the School just prior to 9:00 a.m.
