LCRC to launch new program: Adopt a Plot – For Goodness Sake Come on London – let’s get growing
London, Ontario – The London Community Resource Centre is launching a new program for future gardening seasons, urging organizations, business and corporations in the London area to Adopt a Plot – For Goodness Sake.
Each year, the London Community Resource Centre’s Community Gardens program rents out garden plots to a wide array of individuals in the community.
There are, on occasion, instances where plots in garden sites across the city are unused or abandoned. To eliminate the existence of vacant plots throughout the gardening season, and to provide some much needed fresh, local produce to emergency food providers, the London Community Resource Centre
is looking to create a list of community groups, organizations, businesses and corporations who would be interested in assuming the care of these unused plots in order to grow fresh produce. This produce, in turn, could be donated to emergency food providers in the City of London or the London Food Bank.
"When we see or hear a report of an unused or abandoned plot at any of our
23 community gardens across the city, we’re a little disappointed, but now we’re changing that negative into a positive with this exciting new program under the umbrella of our Community Gardens Program," said Linda Davies, Executive Director, London Community Resource Centre.
With the local food movement gaining momentum, combined with the growing urgency related to issues of food security in many communities, the LCRC’s new, volunteer Adopt a Plot – For Goodness Sake Program is not just a "band-aid" on the growing problem of food security, but is, like all of the LCRC programs, a solution.
In addition to aiding the community through this much needed program, organizational and business participation would be promoted in a variety of
methods: on a separate, highly visible section on the LCRC website, in the promotion of and during the LCRC’s annual picnic, inclusion in annual reports, and in future community garden communication materials both public and among existing and future community gardeners.
Along with our Community Gardens Program, the LCRC also works in collaboration on several other programs, and within its vision there is a strong and undeniable connection with them all and the issue of food
security: Collective Kitchens; Community Food Advisors; Healthy Tidbits; Cook It Up! Pilot Project
