Recycling in High Rises & Other Disgusting Things to Do
At Present it Takes a very dedicated Tenant or Condo Owner/Renter in many high rises to consistently recycle. Read on
Does the mess above look anything above like the recycling area in your rental complex(big or small)? If so read on. If not kiss your landlord and thank them for providing enough recycling bins and doing their Provincially mandated duty and running a proper recycling duty at your high rise (that has at least 6 units.
For the rest of us who find bins full 5 days before pick-up and messes like the one in the photo you have one recourse. Call Ms. Angela Whiting at the Ministry of the Environment London District at 519 873-5000 tell her about the situation at your complex.
After pleading with our TransGlobe landlord, the City Environmental Services and many others I finally found the bureaucrat who can investigate the property you live at and issue an order that your landlord provide more bins and an "adequate" recycling program that conforms with Provincial law. Okay, I didn't climb Mount Everest or reach Mars but if you have ever conquered bureacracy you will feel that way.
I am no tree hugger or environmentalist. I just wanted to recycle. I wanted to do so without digging through filthy piles of garbage and recyclables and bins full of God knows what days before collection day. The City of London will not take responsibility for this problem. I've climbed up that tree and they have told me to go to the Province if my landlord won't buy more outside bins like the ones in the photos.
The "Forest City" should not be too proud of this situation. My landlord is the biggest in Landon and I doubt our buiding complex of 600 units is only one with this problem if you consider that 30% of Londoners rent. I did however dig down to the lower bowels of Provincial bureaucracy and reach the person who is investigating the problem where I live. Hopefully other tenants will take advantage of this work.
Unfortunately, they have also relocated the bins to areas that are not really accessible to persons with handicaps that are unable to walk the distance required with their hands full to try and do the proper thing.
