Minimum Standards for Heat in Apartments in London | Print |  E-mail

I have been hearing a great deal of talk as to when landlords have to turn on furnaces and what the temperatures must be these days. Hopefully this will put to rest some of the confusion. It was taken from the most recent version of the City of London's Vital Service's By Law. It reads as follows:

PART 3

3.4 Maintain heat - September to June - minimum requirements

Between the 15th day of September of one year and the 15th of June of the following year, a

landlord shall provide a continuous supply of heat to a rented residential unit so that a minimum

temperature of 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) will be maintained between the hours

of six o'clock

in the morning and eleven o'clock in the evening of the same day, and a minimum temperature of

18 degrees Celsius (65 degrees Fahrenheit) at all other times.

IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR VITAL SERVICES (HEAT, GAS, ELECTRICITY, WATER ETC.) Don't ever hesitate to call the switchboard at City Hall 519 661-2500 and ask for the Property Standards Department.

A Property Standards Officer or another person in that department will be glad to answer your questions on these matters and THE VITAL STANDARDS BY-LAW. Winter is hard enough without heat or running water. The City has excellent staff who will help tenants with these matters.
