Alberta Senior Tenants Stuck Like Prisoners With No Elevators in High Rise | Print |  E-mail

Of all the complaints I have heard from tenants in London and elsewhere since starting the Kipps Lane Tenants Association, broken elevators have been near the top.

The London Fire Services have helped me out with this one. They told me to call an organization called the Technical Standards and Safety Association if elevators are down for and landlords are not doing anything about it. I did that many times and it worked.

In extreme cases, the LFS can intervene by laying a Fire Code Violation on the landlord if the elevator was broken for a significant amount of time.

The situation in the Alberta story has been going on for six months. A few weeks ago they lost their only working elevator. You can read the entire story by clicking here.

The situation there is worse because most tenants are seniors who can't use stairs. Keep this story in mind. Your building could be in the same situation one day. What would you do? Who would you call.
