Scam Alert

The London Police Service is warning the public about an “emergency” telephone scam or “Grandparent Scam” which is typically directed at seniors. These scams have been reported to the London Police Service over the past year, including this month where two incidents were reported.

The most common scenario involves the fraudster contacting potential victims while posing as family member or friend in urgent need of cash. The victim believes a family member needs help and then wire transfers the funds, most often to Quebec, Toronto or Oversees. The London Police Service strongly suggests that before wiring money, take measures to verify the requestor’s identity and their story.  Anyone who suspects an attempt at victimization can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (Phone Busters) at 1-888-495-8501 or on-line at www.phonebusters.com for additional information or to report these crimes.
