London, ON - The London Black History Coordinating Committee today announced its lineup for this year's events taking place throughout the month of February - officially recognized as Black History Month in Canada.
"I welcome all London and area residents join us in this year’s celebrations. These events offer unique opportunities to gather with people of various backgrounds and ages and in enjoying the events together, break down some barriers that still exist amongst us,” says Christina Lord, Chair of the London Black History Coordinating Committee (LBHCC).
Beginning with its Opening Celebration on Saturday January 30 2010 (12-5pm) at Museum London, 12 – 2pm is the Community Gallery with the official opening at 2pm.
Black History Month is a time for the entire community to take part in festivities and events intended to honour the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present.
LBHCC has two other events planned throughout Black History Month.
The Children and Family Program runs at LondonMuseum from February26- 27 and includes various activities such as singing, dancing and storytelling. The Closing Gala takes place at Wolf Performance Hall on February 26 (6.30pm). Performers include jazz vocalist Denise Pelley, Rwandese dancers, hip-hop performer Saidat and many others. The Gala includes the presentation of Awards to two outstanding Black Community Achievers.
The Committee also assists other groups and organizations with the promotion of their activities. These include the Congress of Black Women-London Chapter, the Black Student Association from the University of Western Ontario and the WoodstockMuseum.The LBHCC was formed in 2002, out of a desire to increase awareness of Black History Month activities in the London area.
The Committee is dedicated to providing programs and services that will increase public understanding of the diversity and history of London’s Black community.
The LBHCC has been supported by the London Cross Cultural Learner Centre, Museum London, the London Regional Children's Museum, the City of London and the London Public Library since its beginnings in 2002.
