Urban Cowboy - Yes, John Travolta was once a Young Man | Print |  E-mail

In my never ending attempt to inflict the movies of my youth on the readers of this site I bring you a review of the 1980 Hit "Urban Cowboy" starring John Travolta and Debra Winger (Officer and a Gentleman) with the musical accompaniment of The Charlie Daniels Band, Bonnie Rait and Johnnie Lee Hooker.

Urban Cowboy - One of John Travolta's First Breakthrough Movie Hits (1980)

To read and on-line review of this classic click here. I caught Urban Cowboy on yet another cable Channel regularly featuring full-length movies recently and I loved it. This movie inspired a fashion trend which actually saw high school students wear cowboy hats, boots and all other forms of Western wear.

I can't remember how long that trend lasted but I do remember the bizarre feeling of walking down the hall and watching fellow students with large cowboy hats in front of me. Some guys even wore them in class.

And yes, the guys and the girls wore the tight jeans and western gear like they had converted to a new religion. It was a strange time at Herman High in Windsor. Fashion changed quicker than the weather in high schools.

The movie also spurred a bar craze of mechanical bull riding, western dance contests and contributed to the fanatical success of a a show calle d "Dallas" which ran 13 seasons and featured a good ol' boy from Dallas named J.R. The movie itself is a great date movie and is still worth watching 30 years later
