If you haven't enjoyed a film on the big screen lately this is the one to go to. The plot lines of three impoverished, abandoned and orphaned children in India amidst the colours and sights and sounds of in the slums, countrysides, train stations and markets are well captured on film. Strangely enough the movie has nothing to do with money. The title is an illusion. Three children in the depths of poverty that we can't even imagine in Canada live by their wits in India and grow into adulthood. They inevitably separate. Two long to be with each other again. One embarks down a road that could lead to his death.
The Millionaire game show is the vehicle for that to happen. The mocking game show host and the glitzy set that millions around India watch in public squares and everywhere else that they can find a television is surreal amidst the incredible poverty of Mumbai (Bombay) where over 90 million people live.
If you go to the movie be prepared for some scenes of incredible brutality and violence and poverty. We use that term quite loosely in Canada. This movie gives new meaning to it. Still the three main characters are as human as anyone that we could know and love in our lives.
