Let’s call them “safe zones”

Last night London Police investigated a motor vehicle collision where two pedestrians crossing at an intersection with the right of way were struck by a turning vehicle.  At approximately  8:30 pm on Tuesday evening a 24 yr old female and a 4 yr old child were struck at Springbank Drive and Kernohan Parkway by a vehicle turning left.

The pedestrians were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The 4 year old child is currently in good condition and the 24 year old female is in fair condition at hospital. The 38 yr old male driver was charged with making a turn not in safety. Signalized intersections should be considered absolute “safe zones” for pedestrians who cross with the right of way.  Drivers making turns MUST ensure that the corresponding pedestrian area is clear of pedestrian before starting the turn.  Drivers tend to check for oncoming traffic that might interfere with their turn or stare to their left without looking right.  Pedestrian safety must be ensured at these locations.
