The London Cares Curbside Food Drive kicks off this Friday for the 14th year. Last year 83,730 pounds were collected during the campaign. This year with demand on London Food Bank services higher than ever, the participation of Londoners is especially needed.
"2010 is turning out to be one of the most challenging years for the London Food Bank," says Jane Roy, Co-Executive Director. "Never before have there been so many people turning to the Food Bank for help. Many of these families have never had to use our services before."
Donating is easy! Between June 11 - 19 residents are asked to check the Waste Reduction and Conservation Calendar for their donation day, marked with a heart. On that day, donate non-perishable items in a reusable bag, clear blue recycling bag or plastic grocery bag tied with a ribbon, placed next to the Blue Box at the curb. The City’s recycling contractors, Miller Waste Systems and Waste Management will collect the donations when doing their regularly scheduled recycling pick-ups. Volunteers, wearing ‘London Cares’ t-shirts, will also help collect donations.
"Our London Cares Food Drive is an annual success thanks to the continued generosity of fellow Londoners and dedicated corporate sponsors," says Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best. “It’s a simple and effective way for us to join together to provide increased hope and support to vulnerable citizens in our community - and we hope this year is the biggest turnout yet."
All food collected through the Curbside Food Drive is donated to the London Food Bank. This is a necessary service for those who need a helping hand to get through difficult periods of their lives. The London Food Bank helps 3,115 families per month on average.
