LOCAL BREAST CANCER DRAGONBOAT TEAM HEADS TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN WHISTLER B.C.
On Tuesday, June 29th, ROWBUST, London and Region Breast Cancer Dragonboat Team will be heading to Whistler B.C. to compete in the Canadian National Dragonboat Championships 2010.
For the first time in the history of Dragon Boat Canada, the National body that oversees the Canadian Championships, breast cancer survivor teams will be recognized as athletes who are more than ready to compete at the National level. Rowbust will enter two crews, Rowbust and Dragon Spirit. The competition runs from July 2 to July 4th. Rowbust team members and coaches will be flying direct from London International airport to Vancouver B.C. and will be bused to Whistler, the site of the 2010 Winter Olympics. The event will take place at Rainbow Park, Whistler B.C.Rowbust will proudly represent the city of London and surrounding area as they make history when they compete in the first ever event of this caliber, two firsts in fact; the first time Rowbust has entered the Nationals, as well as the first time for a survivor team division in the Nationals. Rowbust has stepped up their training program this winter under the direction of coaches Cheryl McLachlan and Sarah Shellard, themselves past paddlers with the Canadian Senior Dragonboat Club and have paddled internationally representing Canada.Rowbust has received tremendous community support for winter and spring training from The Athletic Club South who sponsor team memberships. As soon as the 2009 summer racing season finished last September, you could find Rowbust team members begin winter training, poolside, learning top paddling techniques from their coaches. Then it was into the gym five to six days a week for cardio, flexibility, and weight training. In April 2010, they took to the water in their two boats three days a week at Fanshawe Lake, while continuing their cardio, flexibility and weight training. The team has already raced at three 2010 festivals in June including; Outer Harbour Toronto, Pickering Dragonboat Festival and most recently at the International Dragonboat Festival in Peterborough where they came second in a field of 75 breast cancer teams from around the world.
