KIDS…REMEMBER THESE STREET-PROOFING TIPS!
1. When you are walking or biking around your neighbourhood, look for Block Parent signs so you know where help may be if you ever need it. Note that businesses can be Block Parents now too!
2. Walk with a buddy when possible. Pick the best route to your activities and stick to it. Travel in well-populated areas. Avoid wooded areas, secluded areas, parking lots and shopping malls, especially after dark. Always let your guardian know where you are and when you are expected to return. Call if your plans change.
3. Don’t go anywhere or talk with a stranger. If someone tries to convince you to go with them, get to safety first then tell an adult and call 9-1-1.
4. If you need help, look for a Block Parent sign, a police officer, or a business, church or community centre in the area for help.
5. Know your name, address, phone number and the phone number of your parents at work.
6. Report any suspicious activity to an adult and to the police* Call 9-1-1 in an emergency. (You don’t need money to call 9-1-1 from a payphone.)* If possible, get a description of the suspicious person and/or vehicle, including license plate number.
TIPS FOR PARENTS It’s also a good time for parents to realize that there are new routines and most kids will have a far less supervised daily schedule than they are use to.
Know your Child's Summer World: Your children's routines will change for the summer. Make sure that you know exactly where their job, camp, play areas and other activities are located.
Know Your Child's Summer Friends: Your children's friends may change for the summer months. Make sure that you post a list of their friends' names, addresses and phone numbers to contact in case of an emergency. Get to know their friends' parents too for extra reassurance.
Check Out Your Neighbourhood: Take a walk around the neighbourhood with your kids. Show them potential hazards and point out Block Parent homes and other safe places.
Create An Information Centre: Establish a single information and message centre in the house where you and your kids can routinely leave notes detailing where you are and when you'll be back.
