Can a Pet Grieve the Death of its Animal Partner? | Print |  E-mail

I am not an expert in animal behaviour. But I've watched our two cats grow up together for 15 years and you can't help but draw a few conclusions.

Our two cats were friends but not much more than that. Last month we lost one of our beloved feline companions due to a bad heart.

Strangely, the other cat took it very hard. She wanders the apartment aimlessly and suddenly became very vocal and affectionate. She looks very lost. The loss of our dear Fergie has been hard on all of us but like all pet owners, we have to guess how our surviving cat is taking the change in our home. We pay lots of attention to her and make sure she is well taken care of.

I did find an interesting article on the internet which seems to say that pets CAN GRIEVE THE LOSS OF THEIR HUMAN AND PET FRIENDS. Click here to read the article.

I'd love to see some comments of your experiences to this article. Pets have always been a big part of our lives. It was very hard to put our friend Fergie down, but it is a part of owning a pet. Now we are caring for Sarah, who seems at a loss without him, even though they were just roomates and occasional playmates in life.
