Five years ago I started growing cherry tomatoes, patio tomatoes and a few other varieties on my balcony. I imagined the idea growing as "Balconies in Bloom" with people growing one flower or whatever they liked.
I floated the idea to the Kipps Lane Initiative people but it went nowhere. Community Gardens are great but apartment dwellers would get to see their balcony gardens every morning and all day.
This year I doubted I could keep the tradition up after two moves. But a visit to Heeman's Greenhouses just outside London off Dundas Rd. netted me some beautiful plants with a few weeks head start of growth. We've just started harvesting the tomatoes. I buy a plant for a friend in the TransGlobe buildings each year and I learn how it does by email. Great Fun!
Truthfully you could buy tomatoes cheaper than growing them this way but you would never have this much fun. If you are a man/woman or child of the soil, it's in your blood.
You have to grow something each spring and summer. Just imagine if all of Kipps Lane/Huron/Boullee had more BALCONIES IN BLOOM. It wouldn't cost much and it would do a lot of good for everyone. If enough people participated costs would be next to nothing because plants, pots and other garden needs could be traded amongst participants.
