September 24, 2010 LOCAL BREAST CANCER DRAGONBOAT TEAM ENDS SEASON WITH FIRST AND SECOND PLACE FINISHES IN STRATFORD, ON On Saturday, September 18th, ROWBUST, London and Region Breast Cancer Dragonboat Team sent two teams to compete in the Stratford Rotary Dragonboat Festival. ROWBUST competed in the Breast Cancer Division and ROWBUST – Dragon Spirit competed in the Women’s Division. The teams competed against 58 other teams including seven breast cancer teams from across Ontario and seven competitive women’s teams.
The day was filled with wind, clouds, sunshine, rain and swans paddling away from the fast approaching dragonboats. In the end, ROWBUST demonstrated that the training program initiated last winter paid off as they took the first place title in the Breast Cancer Challenge. ROWBUST – Dragon Spirit raced in four races and ended the season with a second place finish in the C Division Championship. In addition, Spirit took third place in the Women’s Challenge crossing the finish line 0:00.25 seconds behind the first place winner. This summer has been great for the team. We took to the water in April 2010 after winter training at The Athletic Club. The team raced in three 2010 festivals in June including; Outer Harbour Toronto, Pickering Dragonboat Festival and the International Dragonboat Festival in Peterborough where they came second in a field of 75 breast cancer teams from around the world. The team competed in the National Dragonboat Festival in Whistler, B.C bringing home the National Breast Cancer Division title to London.
