2010 Tourism Spending Tops $490.3Million!For Immediate Release
London’s tourism economy grew by 3.2% according to a recent report by the Canadian Tourism Research Institute (CTRI), a division of the Conference Board of Canada. The report indicates that tourism spending in London hit $490.3 million dollars in 2010, an increase of $15 million dollars over ‘revised’ 2009 figures.
The report also shows that, according to the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture*, London was host to more than 1.6 million overnight visitors in 2010, up 2% from a year earlier. The CTRI study shows that both U.S. and International visitors to London increased 1.7% and 7.4% respectfully. These increases were joined by an increase of 1.9% of visitors from other parts of Canada.
In 2010, the largest portion of spending in London was attributed to spending on food and beverage, which totaled $173.0 ($128.6 million in restaurants and $44.4 million in food stores). Accommodation spending accounted for $59.3 million dollars. Approximately 8,135 jobs were supported within Ontario by tourism spending in London, 6,335 of these in the Forest City. The purpose of the study was to measure the impact of tourism spending in London during 2010.
