Thames Valley District School Board - October 31st, 2011
Monday, Oct. 31, 2011 – Grade 9 students across the Thames Valley school district will go to work with a parent, relative or an adult friend on Wednesday during Take Our Kids to Work day.
The program was designed with the belief that if students understand the jobs of their relatives, they will be able to make better decisions about their own future careers.
One popular workplace among London students is police headquarters. This year, about 20 students will enjoy a day of activities, including time with the K-9 unit, seeing a polygraph test, visiting cells, observing the emergency response team and seeing a breath test administered.
Const. Dennis Rivest says students always enjoy the day and he expects this year will be even more appealing because they’ve added a forensics demonstration.
“Take your kid to work day is always a great time for the students,” says Rivest says. “They love it here. I think they’ll find the forensic exercise particularly interesting, especially with the popularity of shows like CSI.”
London Police join many organizations introducing Grade 9 students to the world of work, including CAMI Automotive in Ingersoll, and Ichiban Sushi House, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and TLC Laser Eye Centres in London.
At the TVDSB Education Centre in London, a group of students will be greeted by Director of Education Bill Tucker at 8:30 a.m. and get a tour of the administration building before spending the afternoon with their parents.
Take Our Kids to Work is a program of by The Learning Partnership, which encourages more than 200,000 high school students across Canada spend the day job-shadowing a parent, relative, friend or volunteer host. For more information, see: www.thelearningpartnership.ca.
