DIMITRIE'S RENT CHECK #4

Now here is a really dumb question. How will you get out of your apartment complex when the snow hits? Do you know what kind of arrangements your landlord and superintendent have made to clear the snow when it falls? Don't laugh!

It usually takes every landlord at least three heavy snowfalls and ice storms before they actually stockpile enough salt, de-icer and get enough trucks contracted to clear your lot early enough in the day so you can get to work or school or just to walk to the bus stop.

If you have to walk to the bus stop at 6 am, there is a damn good chance you will beat your super to the sidewalk and the plow to the roadway in your complex and you will have a hell of a time walking to the bus stop or getting your car out.

What should you do? Send an email, or give a phone call to your landlord or super and ask who they have hired to deal with the snow and ice when winter comes. Don't take a pat on the head when they say we've got it under control. You are the one who has to get to work or to an exam on time. You pay the rent.

Ask them specifically at what time the roads and sidewalks are cleared, salted and shovelled in the morning? Make sure you ask their name since you will probably be talking to a property management company.

I would avoid asking your super these questions. They don't know the answers until their bosses tell them. That's usually the night before. Call the landlord and property management office. Get their names.

Put their contact info in your cell. Text them, call them or email them. Just let them know that you work hard for the rent dollars you pay and that this winter you expect to have clear roadways and sidewalks in your building complex.

It's not much to ask for.
