Cell phone “dropped” call With the anticipation that the Provincial Government is set to announce a new law concerning cell phone use while driving, London Police Service want all motorists, regardless of the new law, to focus their attention on driving and reduce and limit all driver distractions.
Safe driving is a physical and mental task. With the volume and pace of traffic on our roads any lapse in mental focus can result in a serious collision.
Two recent London collisions are examples of this: On August 21st of this year an elderly female driver suffered serious injuries when her stopped vehicle was rear ended by a second motorist. This other motorist admitted to police that he was answering his phone when he dropped it and tried to reach for it.
This past weekend another motorist lost control of his vehicle when he also dropped his cell phone and attempted to pick it up.
The vehicle struck a concrete median and pillar causing approximately $12,500.00 damage. Both drivers were charged with Careless driving which carries a fine of $325 and 6 demerit points. Drivers must ask themselves: What’s more important the lives and safety of other motorists, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists or that phone call.
